It's no secret that Game of Thrones
has been plagued by spoilers and leaks over the years. Now, they'll stop at nothing to avoid ruining the end of the show. And that means shooting multiple endings.
HBO president of programming Casey Bloys told The Morning Call
that they're going to shoot multiple versions of the end of Season 8 of Game of Thrones
in order to keep the series' ending a secret.
"I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they're going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really [knows] what happens," Bloys said.
"You have to do that on a long show. Because when you're shooting something, people know. So they're going to shoot multiple versions so that there's no real definitive answer until the end."
Game of Thrones isn't the first show to go to such lengths to avoid spoilers. Dallas filmed different characters shooting J.R. in 1980. Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and more also shot different endings in order to keep the real finale a secret.
But Game of Thrones, in particular, has had significant problems with spoilers and leaks. For Season 7 alone, details about the entire season's plot were leaked online early, an episode was leaked because of a security breach with Game of Thrones' Indian broadcasting partner, and HBO had problems with hackers.
Hopefully, though, HBO and Game of Thrones will keep the ending tightly under wraps. And whatever ending they choose has to be big enough to satisfy all the die-hard Game of Thrones fans.
"Finales are tough," Bloys admitted. "If you think about, Six Feet Under, well, that was a pretty good finale. But if you think about Seinfeld, if you think about The Sopranos, if you think about Breaking Bad. Everybody has an opinion about how a show should end."
