There have been plenty of NFL players on Dancing with the Stars, and while the all-athlete edition will probably have at least one more, it won't be former quarterback Johnny Manziel. According to The Blast, the Heisman Trophy winner was a top contender to compete on DWTS: Athletes, but the producers have taken him out of the running due to him being "too controversial."

Manziel, a 25-year-old quarterback from Texas, was recruited out of high school and played for Texas A&M. In 2012 he became the first freshman ever to win the Heisman Trophy. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and played with them for two years before being released. He's now a free agent.

Controversy has also been a huge part of Manziel's story. He was first arrested before he even got to college for disorderly conduct. He was pulled over by police in 2015 after arguing with his girlfriend, though he was not arrested. He's been to rehab for substance abuse and earlier this year he revealed that he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

According to The Blast, Manziel was one of the initial picks by producers to compete on Dancing with the Stars: Athletes, but they eventually deemed him "too controversial" and chose not to include him in the cast.

However, DWTS: Athletes may still include a former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that pro Emma Slater's dad started following Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton on Twitter, which may be an accidental clue that he will be competing with Emma. Newton won the Heisman in 2010 and was the first pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Will Cam Newton be on DWTS, or will the show find another NFL player?

The full cast of Dancing with the Stars: Athletes will be revealed Friday, April 13 on Good Morning America. The show premieres Monday, April 30 at 8/7c on ABC. For more updates, like BuddyTV's DWTS Facebook page.
