Summer is right around the corner and that means the return of Big Brother
CBS. The show is currently in the final stages of casting and so far we
know from executive producer Allison Grodner that Big Brother 20 will
feature a brand-new cast.
Big Brother 20 Will Be a Brand-New Cast>>>
Over the years, we've come to accept certain things from a new cast. The overwhelming majority of them will probably be attractive men and women in their 20s ready to hop into a showmance as soon as possible. But what are some new and different types of casting choices I'd like to see the show try out?
Will Jody's Amazing Race Win Impact Big Brother?>>>
Here's a list of four things I hope to see when the cast for Big Brother 20
is revealed.A Woman Over 40
Not including Celebrity Big Brother
, this show has only featured a total of eight women over the age of 40, and that includes three in the first three seasons. Jodi Rollins from Big Brother 14
, who was evicted on the first night, was the last female HG who wasn't in her 20s or 30s. After the success of Kevin on season 19, it would be nice to see a woman of a certain age get another shot at this game. If we're lucky, she'll be as wild and memorable as season 10's Renny or season 13's Shelly.Fewer Singles
For better or worse, showmances have become a staple of the show. But do we need so many of them? Big Brother 19
went into showmance overboard with three couples all pairing off within the first week: Jessica and Cody, Rave and Matt and Elena and Mark. It's bad enough that Jessica and Cody's success on The Amazing Race may inspire more HGs to look for love, but we don't need everyone in the house to be single and ready to mingle.More Racial DiversityBig Brother 18
was a massive improvement in terms of the show's racial diversity. Nearly half of the cast was non-white, including Da'Vonne, Zakiyah, James, Bridgette, Natalie, Victor and Jozea. The show took a big step back in season 19 where just four of the 17 HGs were non-white (Dominique, Rmases, Alex and Josh). I hope the show goes back to the season 18 model because, including Over the Top
, Celebrity Big Brother
and all of Canada, we're now 27 seasons into this show without a single black winner, which is absurd and unacceptable. 2 Gay Men
When it comes to casting, there's usually one, and only one, slot for a gay man. There have only been two seasons when the show chose to include two openly gay men and both were gimmicks: exes Joe and Dustin on season 8 and Joshuah and Neal from season 9, the disastrous winter season with a blind date twist that ended abruptly when Neal walked out after a week.
Whether it's to illustrate that there are multiple different types of gay men or to try and create the U.S.'s first same-sex showmance, it would be nice if the show would think outside the box. Fans of Big Brother Canada
have already seen this, whether it's Mitch and Raul from season 4 or Gary and William from season 5. Let's try it out here now.
